Maybe you have several symptoms that seem connected. Maybe you are tired of leaving appointments with more questions than answers. Your first visit with a holistic family doctor is a chance to look at your health more broadly, while still taking medical history, evidence, and safety seriously. A little preparation can help you get more out of that conversation.
Start with the story behind your symptoms
Write down what has changed, when it started, and what concerns you most. Is fatigue affecting your workday? Did your sleep change before your energy dropped? Have you noticed new weight changes, digestive problems, or a shift in exercise tolerance? A simple timeline often helps more than a long list of self-diagnoses.
Bring the records that matter
Recent lab results, specialist notes, medication changes, screening reports, and relevant imaging can help your clinician see what has already been investigated. If you have older results that show a trend, bring those too. You do not need to arrive with every record you have ever collected. Focus on documentsrelated to your current concerns and ongoing conditions.
Include every medication and supplement
List your prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, herbal supplements, and any hormone-related products. If possible, include the dose and how often you use them. Photos of labels are helpful. “Natural” products can still cause side effects or interact with prescriptions, so the complete list matters.
Think beyond lab results
A whole-person visit may cover sleep, stress, diet, physical activity, family history, and day-to-day routines. None of this means your symptoms will be dismissed as “just stress.” It helps your clinician evaluate the full picture and decide whether specific examinations, testing, lifestyle changes, medications, or referrals make sense.
Questions worth asking
Consider asking: What might explain my symptoms? Which tests, if any, would change what we do next? Could anything I take be making matters worse? Which changes should I prioritize first? What should improve, and when should we reassess? You should leave knowing the purpose of your plan and what comes next.
Can the first visit be virtual?
Many discussions about symptoms, history, medications, existing laboratory findings, and follow-up plans can take place by video. Some concerns still require an in-person examination, testing, or local referral. Availability depends on your location and the clinical needs of your visit.
Come with questions. Leave with a clearer plan.
